Being a Mom can be quite the challenge. Some say that it is one of the most difficult jobs there is. It is time consuming, laborious and at times overwhelming. It is also very adventurous, stimulating, and even comical. I think the key to do this job of being a Mom well is taking time for yourself and not feeling guilty about it.
It’s very difficult for me to take time to myself, but I do it! I have had to be creative in doing so because my husband works full time and is not always available to watch the children. Plus, I homeschool my kindergartener and at the same time keep track of a toddling eighteen-month-old. I am not going to lie, it is a lot of work! So how do I find time to re-energize and be the best I can be for my kids? I run.
Running is something I enjoy and completely passionate about. Sometimes I run to be alone, and sometimes I run to interact socially with friends. Since my husband works full time and has a structured schedule during the week, I choose to get up in the wee hours of the morning while everyone is sleeping and run. It’s the best feeling ever! I can be in my own thoughts and solve all the problems of the world…and at the end I feel amazing!
People ask me all the time how I do it, and you know it’s a process of figuring things out. Somedays it doesn’t work to my expectation, but eventually it all comes together, and I make it work. Where there is will, there is a way. You make time to brush your teeth, you make time to do your hair, you make time to eat a meal, so make time to take for yourself.
Here’s a couple ideas of how to workout and take time to yourself:
• Join a gym that has reputable child care – Although this can be costly, this is the easiest way to be able to work out and get some social interaction at the same time.
• Take time at off peak hours when children are sleeping – This is the way I choose to take my time, as it works best with our family schedule.
• Trade baby-sitting – This can be great for single parents.
• Put the kids on bikes and babies in a jogger – Not necessarily taking time to oneself, however it works well when trying to get a work out in and get those endorphins released and feel amazing!
